LEAPS Modules for Genetic Counselors and Students

Welcome to the LEAPS Modules for Genetic Counselors and Genetic Counseling Students!

These modules were developed by Chenery Lowe for the Jane Engelberg Memorial Fellowship-sponsored study "A Remote Web-Based Approach to Assessing and Developing Genetic Counseling Students’ Patient-Centered Communication Skills."

The modules are publicly available for genetic counselors and students to learn and practice their communication skills.

Which module would you like to review?

If you are doing this training for the first time, we suggest that you start with Module 1, Listen and Learn.
Each modules takes about 25-40 minutes to complete.

Module 1: Listen and Learn (active listening and client engagement)
Module 2: Educate and Exchange perspectives (client-centered education strategies)
Module 3: Assess and Address problems (assessing client's understanding; eliciting lifestyle information)
Module 4: Partner and Participate in care decisions (decision-making and problem-solving)
Module 5: Support and Strengthen (empathy and rapport)
